    You asked.

On tool cabinet you were drilling through 7/8" MDF, 3/4" plywood and then a 2 3/4" shelf. So as you said it requires 4 3/8" just to get through the shelf and a little more to get into the next divider. So your math was correct.

However setting the bit at a depth of 4 5/16" doesn't get there :)

Since you dont like math anymore than most of us, why not gauge the depth off the back of the cabinet and you could have visually checked the bit depth into the inside divider?

HI Rich, I must be brain dead this morning, I cant for the life of me remember this circumstance.  That said, if it involved math then I purposely block it out!  Going to have to change my attitude, I love math, I love math, I love math......

Forget math, relative dimensioning is where it's at.
