Cosman Dovetail/Tenon (either one) Saws

    Hello,

    I am new to this forum and I have a quick question about your dovetail/tenon saws.  I saw the vid which explained that the first 2" is 22tpi.  I've read things online which suggest that it is very difficult to sharpen any saw that has a teeth per inch count this high.  Is it difficult to sharpen the first portion of these saws?

    I can't answer the sharpening question. I however just purchased one of Rob's saws 2 weeks ago from him at a woodworking show in Canada. It was just in time for a dovetail workshop that our local woodworking guild put on last weekend. I had a chance to try 2 other saws, a Lee Nielson and the Veritas. They all cut ok, but with Rob's saw the front 22 tpi really helped me! It started easier and cut way faster then the others. This helped me make straighter cuts with less effort than all the other saws. Sorry about not answering your question, but I thought this might also help in your decision making of purchasing a saw.

    Hi Trevor, dovetail saws dont need to be sharpened very often.  If you add up the total amount of cutting they do in a project, it is not a lot.  Also, being a rip tooth  unlike a crosscut, there is a lot of cutting surface and the nature of "knocking out" chunks of wood parallel to the grain is a lot less demanding than severing fibers across the grain.  The latter needs to be very sharp to produce a joint worthy surface.  

    as for the actual sharpening, if you use a 4 or 5 inch dbl X-slim taper file, it is not hard to do.  one or two strokes per tooth filed perpendicular to the run of the blade.  cutting face on the little teeth is 30 degrees (back) so they ride over the wood instead of digging in.  Cutting face of the main teeth is 0 degrees or vertical, they are file to be aggressive and fast cutting.  If you are going to tackle the task yourself, get or make a vise to support the blade very close to the tooth line.  Head gear to magnify the teeth is a real help and as mentioned, the proper file.  Some practice  is certainly advisable.  You always have the option of sending it back to us to sharpen.  

    Thanks for the plug Brian, the results you posted on fb were admirable.  I am teaching a one day dovetail class this Friday in Salt Lake City, UT at the woodcraft store.  We will see stellar results, great tools make the job easier, they remove all the variables except that of the user.  Given proper instruction with good technique, less than a full day is required for most interested folks to cut an awesome through dovetail.

    I have never sharpened a saw before and I thought I would ask the question.  I see now what Rob said about it not needing to be sharpened all that often.  Totally makes sense.  I am considering the dovetail or the smaller version of the tenon saw.  I am also looking into the chisels.  Funds aren't as plentiful right now so I'm not sure about the cost at this point but it does all appear to be off the highest quality.

    Rob are you doing any classes in the Maritimes?  I would love to be in on that!
